内容記述 | The New Course of Study for teaching Japanese language in elementary schools suggests using Japanese myths as teaching materials in grades 1 and 2. In order to use them as supplem entary materials, the mythological tales must be extracted from their contexts in such traditional collections as the “Kojiki,” and retold in forms more suitable for children, but it is important that such new versions do not become unfaithful to the originals. Although adaptations may be necessary to make them understandable and enjoyable, it is important that they do not implant cultural misinformation in the minds of the students. For example, the main character in the “Kojiki” myth of the “Inaba-no-shiro-usagi” is the god O-kuni-nushi, but in an adaptation, the rabbit in the story is made into the main character for the sake of student interest, a suitable adaptation. However, the name of the rabbit in the new version contains the ideogram “white” (shiro). The original “shiro,” however, may mean “white,” but it could perhaps mean “naked” (having had his fur ripped off), or even “wearing a white kimono.” As research has not yet conclusively shown which explanation is correct, the name of the rabbit in the children’s version should be left in its original phonetic characters (hiragana). |
