In this study, we examined important factors in postmortem care, particularly in attending to the death of patients, which had been difficult with conventional quantitative research alone. Spontaneous discussions with nurses were used to seek enhanced performance in postmortem care including institutions. With regard to handling the body of the deceased, a majority of nurses had a tendency to treat the task in the same way as the care given patients before death rather than as a lifeless body. Their feelings and attitudes toward the postmortem care differed depending on their degree of commitment to the patient before death.
