The objective of this study was to investigate measures for promoting the career development of administrators. A self-report questionnaire survey was conducted on a total of 3911 nurse administrators (senior-level nurses and higher positions) at one of 117 hospitals nationwide. The results of analysis were as follows. 1. While senior nurses and head nurses developed their careers as nurse administrators within a given hospital, deputy directors of nursing and those in higher positions were more likely to have experience working as a nurse administrator at multiple hospitals. 2. Most nurse administrators had three to five mentors, who consisted predominantly of superiors at work, and met their primary mentor in their early 30s. 3.
