The subjects were four medical social workers living in Fukushima prefecture, and a qualitative synthesis method was used in analyzing their responses during semi-structured interviews. Employees of medical organizations in Fukushima, the subjects were involved in disaster relief operations immediately after the earthquake. In addition to their regular full-time professional work, they also belonged to six other volunteer organizations, in both professional consulting and support capacities. They discovered during this relief work that a disparity of viewpoints and methods existed with respect to the work being provided, and that policy differences most prominently arose among their fellow professionals during times of interdisciplinary collaboration.\nThe issue also arose of a need for support for the support workers themselves, and also of what social workers could do to prepare for similar future disasters.
