A tendency towards longer withdrawal periods was observed as the age of the subjects increased. As for the causes of their “hikikomori”, for the younger age group the most common were: \"could not adjust to school (including club activities)\" and \"could not adjust to the workplace,\" in descending order of prevalence. In the middle-aged and older age groups, the most common causes were: \"suffered from an illness that required long-term treatment,\" \"did not fit in at work,\" and \"did not have good relationships with friends and family,\" once again in descending order. Independently of “hikikomori” period length, 20% of respondents rarely went outside.
